SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead Will Get You Back To Business After A Water Damage

1/8/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Damage– Pipe Break

A commercial client stands to lose more than just the damage caused by a water leak when a water line breaks. Their business has to close until the water is removed, everything is dried, and repairs are made. The business may have to lay off employees, and customers cannot visit the site until everything returns to normal. A fast response by water removal specialists and construction repair contractors can reduce the loss significantly.

That's why you should call the experts at SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead as soon as you have a commercial water damage. We know how important it is to get to the job site and begin recovery to limit the time your business is offline. We are available on a 24 /7 day a week basis and usually can be onsite in less than 4 hours. A water line joint that blows out inside a wall can deliver hundreds of gallons of water in a few.

What Moisture Mitigation Work Needs to be Completed

One of the first steps SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead takes when the team arrives onsite is to assess the situation and make sure that there are no electrical or other hazards that might be dangerous to employees and our team members. If the water leak is inside a wall, which many are, we can remove the drywall to expose the water pipe for repairs.

Water can spread quickly, and in many cases, water seeps behind baseboards, into walls, under carpeting, and into the underpad. If we do not remove all sources of moisture, our experience tells us that these areas can be a future source of microbial growth and odors.

We may need to remove carpets, baseboards and make a one-foot flood cut in the drywall, especially near the water leak, to gain access to water and moisture inside the walls. We remove all of the moisture using directed air movers to evaporate the moisture and dehumidifiers to remove the humidity. Once the commercial space is dry, contractors can begin work to replace the drywall, baseboards, and install new carpeting and underpad.

The faster you act following a commercial water damage, the faster we can get you back in business. Call SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead at 516-620-4579 for 24/7 service.

When Property Damage Occurs What Is Your Responsibility as a Property Owner or Tenant?

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

If you rent an apartment or unit in a building and experience water damage, here is some information for you!  Figuring out exactly what is your responsibility or your landlords can be very tricky and this blog is here to potentially help guide you in the right direction.

Lease:

If there is damage to the building itself, look into your lease as your landlord most likely will have insurance for their property.  If this is unclear in your lease, ask your landlord where you stand in the event of water damage so you know before it happens.

Renters Insurance:

Anyone who rents should have renters insurance. Some places will even require it before allowing you to move in. Of course there are many varieties of renters insurance. Some cover interior fixtures like walls, floors, and pipes while others cover personal belongings.

Maintenance:

A landlord should ensure that the units are livable. This would include upkeep and repairs to prevent such things as water damage from occurring. However, it is still up to the renter to repeatedly contact the landlord about any issues that may occur until they are resolved.

Property:

If you are the owner of the building you are renting out, the property itself should be covered under your insurance. This would include the floors, walls, and interior fixtures. It may fall under renters insurance as well.

If you are the landlord of a building and find yourself facing any type of water, mold, or fire damage, do not hesitate to contact us at SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead! We will work with you and your insurance company whether you are renting units to tenants or units to business owners. Call today - (516) 620-4579!

Asbestos At Work

3/8/2018 (Permalink)

In this blog we are going to veer off the beaten path a little bit and discuss asbestos in a work environment. If you believe you may have asbestos in your place of work feel free to give us a call as we are associated with a fantastic team of asbestos abatement professionals.

High Risk Occupations:

While even the average office worker can potentially face exposure to asbestos, these are some of the more common fields in which you could come in contact. Construction workers, as this industry has one of the highest uses of asbestos-containing materials. Construction is generally considered one of the most dangers fields as it is due to the many accidents that can occur. It’s estimate that 1 million construction workers are exposed to asbestos materials each year. Shipyard workers, as shipyards contain high quantities of asbestos. These workers are among the most diagnosed with asbestos related diseases. Mechanics, as whether it be a vehicle or an aircraft, asbestos exposure is always a high risk. Auto repair shops often times have poor ventilation and circulation which can make asbestos more concentrated. Plant workers, as both chemical plant and industrial plant workers face asbestos exposure on the job. Power plant workers deal with equipment such as boilers, generators, and turbines, which all pose a threat of asbestos. Firefighes unfortunately are exposed to toxins like asbestos on the job on a regular basis. Many older buildings built before 1980 contain asbestos materials. In many cases protective gear worn for fighting fires will also help prevent exposure to the asbestos.

Workers’ Rights:

While there are many proactive regulations in place to help protect workers, many may still be exposed on the job. If you feel you have gotten sick as a result of asbestos exposure at work you may have legal rights in the situation. Always wear protective material and know what signs to look for when working in an area that could potentially contain asbestos.

Property Owners and Renters

Hurricane Tips for the Workplace

11/21/2017 (Permalink)

While most individuals are aware of safety at home during a hurricane, many overlook the importance of safety in the work place during a hurricane. Here are some preventative measures a business owner or employer can make to help ensure the safety of the property and staff.

Property:

If you live in an area that you know is prone to hurricanes or tropical storms it would be a good idea to install the proper roofing, doors, and windows. Have sandbag’s readily available to prevent flooding in the building. Keep all utilities such as water heaters on higher ground to avoid water damages. If possible try to turn off utilities prior to a hurricane making landfall.

Information:

Most business’ have files that contain important information such as documents, banks, suppliers, etc. It is important to have a system in which these documents are well protected. Backing up documents on to a different hard drive off site or even protecting paper documents with waterproof containers can save a lot of trouble after the storm passes.

Preparedness Checklist:

  • Battery operated radio or television
  • Non-perishable three day food supply for you and your employees
  • Three day supply of water for you and your employees (One gallon of water per person, per day)
  • Coolers and containers for water and washing
  • Blankets, pillows, cots, and chairs
  • First Aid Kit and first aid manual
  • Flashlights, batteries, light-sticks
  • Tool kit (basic tools, gloves, etc.)
  • Camera and film for documenting damages
  • Whistle/signal flare to signal for help
  • Tarps, plastic bags, duct tape
  • Cleaning supplies, including mops, towels and garbage cans
  • Smoke alarms and fire extinguishers
  • Electric generator
  • Gas for vehicles, generators and other equipment
  • Cash, ATM cards, credit cards proper identification
  • Emergency contact information such as the nearest hospital and police

Commercial Mold Prevention

11/17/2017 (Permalink)

In this blog we would like to go over mold prevention in commercial buildings and why it is so important. The main reason you’ll want to prevent mold in your building is the health issues and allergic reactions that are often a result of mold growth. Even people with strong immune systems can become affected by prolonged exposure to spores.  Irritated skin, nasal -congestion, itchy eyes, and difficulty breathing are just some of the symptoms you may experience if exposed to mold.

Prevention:

  • Vigilance – By routinely inspecting your building for sins of mold you will be able to catch and treat the problem area before it is able to spread. Be sure to check damp or moist areas and take notice of any musty odors.
  • Repairs – Unsealed windows, leaky roofs, and cracked foundations can all allow moisture to enter the building and make it quite easy for mold to grow. If possible, try to catch and remediate any water damage to prevent mold growth.
  • Moisture – If your building is located in an area of high humidity you may want to look into having dehumidifiers on site. Damp air makes it quite easy for mold to begin to grow, so running smaller units in the basement or attic can help to keep everything dry.
  • Clean - Air conditioning, ventilation, and heating systems can actually blow around mold spores. You can reduce the damage by make sure your HVAC system and ducts are routinely cleaned and maintained by a licensed professional.
  • The Professionals – If you are concerned about mold growth in your commercial building, do not hesitate to have a mold remediation specialist come and properly diagnose and treat any existing mold problems. These issues should be responded to quickly to ensure that occupants of your building are not exposed to mold for a prolonged period of time.

At SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead we have several years of experience in commercial mold remediation. Should you find your commercial property in need of our services do not hesitate to contact us 24/7 as we would be happy to help!
